Mommie's Movie Reviews

Over the years it has become more and more difficult to find movies (animated included) without some form of inappropriate dialogue unsuitable for young children. As a mother trying to raise her children to be pure and unspotted from the cruel reality of the real world, it’s been challenging. Finding “Family Night” movies suitable for the entire family to enjoy without suggestive language, subliminal messages nor sexual innuendos is my goal.

Please see the animated children's movies below that I have personally rated and reviewed for parents out there who like me don't like surprises after you've already rented the movie. Please feel free to leave a comment below in the comment field if you agree, disagree or just have something else to add. I'd love to hear from you.

TANGLED
GRADE = B+

MY 2-CENTS
Since I did not read the parental advisory warning on the DVD case prior to watching the movie I wont  be as critical of this animated feature film.  After all they did try to warn me of some material being unsuitable for children.  But it leaves me to wonder...who are Disney movies for, children or adults?

Other than the fact that someone gets stabbed, dark red blood stains are visible on the shirt and rebellious behavior was slightly condoned, Tangled was decent.  I just get a little over protective when it comes to my youngest child who is very impressionable and likes to imitate what she sees and hears.  If your comfortable with mild violence then these things wont bother you as much as it bothered me.

On a lighter note, Rapunzel is a sweet, pure and beautiful young lady who you can't help but love. It was refreshing to watch a Disney character with a sweet innocence maneuvering comfortably through a not so innocent society.

  The entire family including the teenagers found this movie enjoyable.

MEGAMIND
GRADE = A-

MY 2-CENTS

This movie is actually a tough one for me to rate due to the fact that as an adult I found it to be hilarious. But it's not all about me, it's all about the kids. The movie starts off with Megamind falling to his death which sent a chill down my spine in an eerie way. That was a tad bit much for me. Then we learn about his life and why he behaves the way he does. You start to feel compassion for him and gradually start to understand his predicament. He and his buddy Minion are comical together and I found myself laughing throughout the whole movie. Megamind even shows us a quick glimpse of his cartoon “swag” at the end by breaking out with the “dougie” along with some other fancy footwork.

Although I did not find any obvious innuendos to mention (awesome!!) there were some parts in the movie that seemed to encourage bad behavior in the beginning which could send the wrong message to a young child unable to sit still and watch attentively from beginning to end. That said, I found the movie to be entertaining and enjoyable for the whole family along with a positive message about overcoming evil with good for those paying attention.

One of my personal favorites!

PRINCESS AND THE FROG
GRADE = B

MY 2-CENTS

Overall the movie was good.  Disney's first African American princess was gracious and endearing.  She was very easy to love due to her hospitality and southern charm.  I loved the fact that Tiana's character was a "Go Getter".  A hard worker with dreams of becoming a business owner one day.  A wonderful role model for kids and adults alike.

However, I can not ignore the fact that the movie uses black magic that gave it sort of a devilish dark feel causing young children to be very afraid.  The nightmarish visuals caused my daughter to avoid sleeping alone.  She loves singing along with Tiana  throughout the movie with songs like "I'm Almost There"  but songs from the "witch doctor" like "Friends on the Other Side" were frightening.

Aside from the Voodooism, It's an appropriate movie to watch with the entire family.  No obvious innuendos or awkwardness to feel bad about.  On occasion the other princess is a bit much with her attempts to land a husband but the overall feel of the movie is that of overcoming barriers, friendship, love and eventually great accomplishment.

THE TOY STORY TRILOGY
GRADE = A+

MY 2-CENTS

Having the complete Toy Story collection is a must.  Each movie is unique in its own way.  The storyline in each animated feature keeps you engaged throughout the entire movie motivating you to anticipate the next one.

After watching Toy Stories 1 and 2 my family and I were eager to see part 3.  The writers make sure that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you are a child or an adult the action and dialogue is fascinating for the entire family.

This movie deserves the highest score for its ability to remain funny and interesting without compromising morals, principles and the integrity of young children.  All three movies do a great job of getting the point across in a way that is suitable for all ages.  Toy Story has the ability to make you laugh, cry and keep you on edge with drama and suspense in an appropriate way.

Well Done Pixar!
